…Ballon d’Or is cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic
The year 2020 will go down in history as a global air-gasping year as the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for best men’s footballer has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
France Football, the organisers of the Ballon d’Or announced on Monday.
“There will be no edition in 2020, because it turns out after thoughtful consideration, that all the conditions are not met,” the editor of the magazine, Pascal Ferre has said.
Football leagues around the world were suspended due to the outbreak of novel COVID-19 in March, which has damaged a lot of activities for the year thereby stopping Ballon d’Or despite the resumption of football activities which began in May.
The cancelled edition for year 2020 will be the first not to hold since the it started in 1956 and won by Stanley Matthews.
According to Ferre, the award takes cognizance of the spectators in determining the winner of the Ballon d’Or which is considered unfair as they are not allowed since the restart of the leagues.
“Protecting the credibility and legitimacy of such an award also means ensuring its flawlessness over time,” Ferre disclosed.
