Other Igbos including Rochas Okoracha have joined the presidential race to produce an Igbo president in 2023
The former governor of Imo State, Rocahas Okorocha, has joined the host of numerous candidates gunning for the highest political position in the country. Rochas made his intention to run for the office of the presidency known in an official letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan on Wednesday.
Okorocha who is now a Senator representing Imo-West Constituency at the National Assembly, under the rulling political party, APC, has a huge support base from his home state, Imo State, where he was a governor for eight years.
Although he became a governor under the unbrella of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Rochas eventually decamped to the rulling party, APC, where he is now a senator and one of the strongest pillars of the party.
Why is he running for president?
It is not yet known why the Imo-West political punter wants to place his bet on the highest political stake in the country. However, in the letter addressed to the senate, the APC senator also stated that he would be addressing a world press conference on the last day of January, 2022, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

There is strong belief that the senator would outline his plans for the country during the world press conference.
Nigeria is the third largest economy in Africa and the presidential election is one of the most fiercely contested political position in the country.
Ethnic Presidency
By this pronouncement, Okorocha has joined a host of other aspirants from the South Eastern region of Nigeria seeking to be Nigeria’s president in 2023. In addition to the list, the governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi, has also indicated interest to run for the office of the president. Also, joining the marathon is the former Senate President of the Federal Republic, Anyim Pius Anyim. And many others.
The Igbos are an extraction of the Southern part of Nigeria. They are majorly of the Christian dominated demography. They are also largely educated and well travelled.

With a population of over 40 million people, the Igbos are the most influencial ethnic extraction in the country. The Igbos are well known for entrepreneurial spirits; hence, a very large percentage of them are businessmen scattered across the country and around the world.

However, despite the fact that the Igbos are some of the richest, most educated and well read people in the country, they have never produced a president of their extraction since Nigeria’s independence in 1960. They, therefore, believe that this is their time to occupy the number one position in the country.
To this effect, Rochas Okorocha’s declaration of interest is one of the many interests from willing political punters from the Igbo region where such ambitious men are not lacking. But does the Igbo nation as a people have the kind of organisation it takes to take the most coveted political position in the most populated country in the Black world?
