Maikanti Baru was 69 years old
The immediate past Group Managing Director of Nigeria’s state oil company, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Maikanti Baru has died.
Baru’s passing was announced on Twitter on Saturday morning by the current GMD of NNPC, Mele Kyari.
“My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,” Kyari said. “He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.”
Who is Maikanti Baru?
He was born on July 1959 in Jama’are, Bauchi State, in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Dr. Baru attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in Kaduna State, Nigeria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with a first class honors. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical engineering.
Before his appointment as the GMD of the NNPC, he served as the Group Executive Director, Exploration & Production of the corporation.
He had also served in different capacities at subsidiaries of the corporation. He was the Group General Manager of Greenfield Refinery Projects, Managing Director of Hyson, Executive Director of Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), General Manager – Gas Division of NAPIMS, Manager – Operations, Procurement Management Services and Manager – Engineering for National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO).
