In today’s edition of Nigeria in Brief: Mercy Johnson reveals a battle with cancer, Tinubu defends Buhari’s N11trn budget deficit, Ireti Doyle cuts ties with husband, Patrick.

Bola Tinubu defends Buhari’s budget deficit

The presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has defended the continued budget deficit spending of the APC government under Buhari administration. Tinubu said this yesterday during a summit held by the organized private sector in Lagos. The accountant and former governor of Lagos maintained that nothing is wrong with budget deficit as most rich countries of the world also run on deficit. Recall that under the Buhari-led APC government, the budget deficit rose from N2.41 trillion in 2016 to N11.34 trillion in 2023. This is coming barely a week after the Debt Management Office disclosed that Nigeria’s debt may hit an all-time high of N77 trillion Naira in June 2023.
