In Today’s edition of Nigeria in Brief; Gombe and Bauchi at war over ownership of Komani oil field; Peter Obi, Tinubu fume as Dogara group endorse Atiku; and other top stories today
The leaderships of the Labour Party LP, and the All Progressive Congress, APC, have fumed over the adoption of Atiku Abubakar by the Northern group led by the former speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Yakubu Dogara. Recall that Nigeria Today had reported that Dogara, and former Secretary to the Federal Government, Babachir Lawal-led group, had endorsed the Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Obi as their preferred candidate. Meanwhile, Yakubu Dogara quickly dissociated himself and group from that statement, insisting the group was still considering. Eventually, the group endorsed Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party as their preferred candidate. However, the Labour Party and the All Progressive Congress have fumed over the development, insisting it is irrelevant and has no bearing to political permutations in the current political arena.

He commissioner of Housing and Urban Development in Benue State, Ekpe Ogbu, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen. Ogbu was kidnapped alongside his in-law, Agbo Ode, and his driver. The men were kidnapped around a farmland belonging to Nigeria’s former senate president, senator David Mark, after Akpa Otobi while on their way from a church program in Utonkon to Otukpo in Ado Local Government Area in Benue state. The commissioner was heading to his village Ndekma, Utonkon Districk of Ado Local Government Area in the evening of Sunday. The police have since recovered the vehicles belonging to the commissioner and taken it to Otukpo Police Division.

The former president of Nigeria, General Olusegun Obsanjo, has stated that oil alone cannot feed the growing population of Nigeria. The president made this call while entertaining the leadership of Mzough Tiv MUT, a civil society in Benue state who paid him a courtsy visit. The ex-president lamented Nigeria’s over dependency on crude oil noting that Nigeria, with a growing population of over 200 million people cannot rely on crude oil to survive. He said only strategic investment in agriculture and production can save the nation from starvation. Obsanjo also, used the opportunity to urge Nigerians to go out and vote during the next election. He added that if the country is make any headway, 2023 should be a turning point.

The states governments of Gombe and Bauchi states have started fighting over the ownership of the newly discovered Kolmani oil well in the north eastern region. The oil well which is situated at the boundary between Gombe and Bauchi was inaugurated by the president, General Muhammadu Buhari, barely two weeks ago. The Kolmani oil field reportedly contains oil in commercial quantity; about 1billion barrels of oil and 500 billion standard feet cubic feet of gas. Recall that during the inauguration of the oil well, the president said he secured the support of the two governors of Gombe and Bauchi for the exploration of the oil feet by the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission NNPC Limited. However, that appears to not have been the case as the two states have issues fresh threats to each other over the ownership of the oil field.

A yet to be identified gunmen have attacked the INEC office in Orlu, Imo state. This comes barely a week after a similar incident in the same Orlu Local Government where gunmen attacked INEC office destroying critical election materials. The chairman of Information and Vote Education, INEC, Festus Okoye, disclosed the attack late Sunday. Nigeria Today News reported on Sunday that INEC had kicked over repeated calculated attack on the commission’s critical infrastructure and electoral materials by unknown elements. Festus noted there has been seven similar attacks on the commission’s offices across the country. He lamented the ugly trend and urged the cooperation of the government and citizen in safeguarding INEC’s critical infrastructure across the country as that would impact on the success of the coming general election.
