ASUU heading towards another strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities in Nigeria is heading towards another strike. This is following a protracting disagreement over the payment of half salaries by the Federal government. Recall that ASUU had embarked on an industrial action on February 2022 which lasted for 8 months to protest Federal Government’s to demand better funding for the country’s universities. The strike was called off in October, following the order by the appeal court. However, the federal government had insisted they were not going to pay the lecturers for months they did not work, insisting on ‘no work, no pay,’ policy and had gone ahead to pay the lectures half salaries for the month of October when the strike was called off. Meanwhile, the lecturers who had not received any salaries for eight months had taken to the street on Monday this week, on a nationwide protest, demanding their full salaries. The discord had lingered since with none of the parties agreeing to cede for the other. However, on Wednesday, the country’s education minister, Adamu Adamu, while addressing the senate, insisted that the FG will not pay the lecturers for months they didn’t work. Responding to the statement, the Chairman of ASUU, Prof, Emmanuel Osodeke, accused the Federal Government of scuttling the future of the Nigerian students and vows to take appropriate action as protests continues.
We will beg debt forgiveness for Nigeria – Atiku
The presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said that when he wins the 2023 presidential election, he would beg debt forgiveness on behalf of Nigeria. The former vice president said this while addressing guests at the Lagos Business School 2022 Alumni Day. Atiku took the liberty to address the myriad of economic malaise challenging the nation at the moment and to proffer his Economic Recovery Plan if he wins the forthcoming election. He maintained that the PDP placed Nigeria on a better economic road map than the APC had in the last 7 years and stated that begging debt forgiveness for Nigeria is a wise thing to do considering how much debt Nigeria is in at the moment. In 2022, Nigeria’s debt portfolio currently stands at N42.84 trillion ($103.31 billion).
War room
The Nigerian senate have been spotted in a rowdy session following a heated deliberation on the issue of the Naira design. A few weeks ago, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a plan to redesign the higher denomination of Nigerian currencies including the N100, N200, N500, and the N1000 notes. The CBN stated that this move was necessary to curb the rampant cases of money laundering, currency hoarding, and the unending and devastating case of kidnapping in the country. The move received mixed reactions from the public. Whereas some lauded the move, others disagreed with the apex bank citing the timelines of the plan. However, the Nigerian senate seems to be finding it hard to either agree or disagree with the redesign plans. This is evident from the recent video that went viral which showed the senate in a rowdy session during a house debate about the Naira.

Half a trillion Naira gone, gone.
The Nigerian Senate is investigating a case of uneven disbursement of half a trillion Naira by the Nigerian Development bank (NDB). The fund was said to have been disbursed to various sectors as selected from the six geo-political zones of the country. However, some members of the Senate, in a bill sponsored by Mohammed Ndume, (APC – Borno) and co-sponsored by Ibrahim Bomai (APC Yobe). The motion was heard yesterday, Wednesday during the mid-week plenary. The motion alleged that there was illegality in the disbursement of the funds, stating that in the report, 46% of the funds went to Lagos state alone where the 19 states of the North got only 11%. The senate therefore set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the disbursement.
