Kaduna has 4.3 million registered voters while Anambra has 2.6 million voters
Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai claimed on Friday that the entire voting population in Anambra State is only equal to the voting population in one local government area in Kaduna State.
El Rufai made this claim while assessing the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s chances of winning the Presidential election on February 25 while featuring on TVC’s Journalists Hangout programme.
According to El-Rufai, Obi stands no chance of winning the Presidential election because he is only popular in Southern Nigeria, which has a sparse voting population. He said Obi could win Anambra, which is his strong base, but noted that the voting population of Anambra is not even up to the population of one local government in his State, Kaduna.
He said, “How can Peter Obi win any election? Peter Obi is polling one percent in Sokoto, 2 percent in Katsina, and 5 percent in Kano, which is where the votes are.

“Not all states are equal. The fact that you are doing 70 percent in Anambra State does not mean somebody doing 10 percent in Kano is not doing better than you are. Kano is five million votes. Anambra is what. The number of votes in Anambra is the size of one local government in Kaduna State. Therefore, not all states are equal.”
However, a check by Nigeria Today has shown that El-Rufai’s claims are not correct. According to the INEC voter register, of the 93.4 million total registered voters, Kaduna State has 4,335,208 registered voters, while Anambra State has 2,656,437 registered voters.
More so, a further check on the breakdown of each of Kaduna’s 23 local government’s total number of registered voters showed that only Kaduna North and Kaduna South local government areas have more than 300,000 registered voters.

Therefore, the claim by Governor El-Rufai that one local government in Kaduna State has more registered voters than the entire Anambra State is completely false and misleading.
