Barter app first suspended virtual card services in 2022
African payment unicorn, Flutterwave has announced the indefinite suspension of the Barter app – the start-up’s flagship payment solution that gained popularity for its virtual card feature.
In an email to users on Tuesday, Fluetterwave said it must suspend Barter app from February 1 in order to “rebuild and launch a better experience”.
It did not say when the possible launch date would be but said potential users could join a waitlist.
What this means to users
According to Flutterwave, this development means, “no new users can sign up to Barter till we finish building, existing users cannot make Barter to Barter transfers or fund Barter balance, while virtual account details will be disabled.”

However, all users will still be able to withdraw funds from their Barter balance and pay for bills and airtime.
Recall that Flutterwave in July 2022 shut down virtual card services on the Barter app at a time many had come to rely on the Barter card services for essential foreign exchange transactions.
