There would have been a coup d’ etat if June 12 election was not annulled- Babangida
Former Nigerian head of state, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has explained the reason for the annulment of June 12, 1993, Presidential election involving M.K.O Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Babangida on Friday in an exclusive interview with Arise News said there would have been a coup d’etat that could have been violent if the election was not annulled.
The former military head of state “It didn’t happen, thank God for the Maradonic way we handled you guys in the society.”

He said the election “could have given room for more instability in the country.”
When asked if he was pressured by the military or civilians to annul the election, Babangida said: “Both.”
“Both, the Military, they can do it because they have the weapons to do it. The other is the social agitation.”
